What is it Google Hummingbird?

In this post I will begin to explain to you what kind of things you can do to your website now that the new Google Hummingbird update has been released.

First of all, what is it Google Hummingbird?

Google are the biggest search engine, they float at around 80% of web searches which is obviously a figure that cant be ignored, whenever they change something, everyone feels the ripples. Google make updates to their algorithm just like when Microsoft do and I am not talking about a few minor software updates, I am talking about the major software roll outs like the next Windows operating system to hit the streets.

The latest Google update is called Hummingbird and its a big change, a really BIG change.

How will Google Hummingbird affect me?

A good question, your website rank will be worked out in a different way than before, Google will take into consideration and re-prioritise these considerations to get better results in their search engines. The way we search for content online is changing, we still use Google but we are searching in different ways, for example, anyone with a new smart phone is able to talk to it and search the internet, this method changes the way we search for things, for example, instead of typing in a keyword, we might ask a question in a sentence so instead of ‘Florist Kent’ you might say “wheres the nearest florist?”. This is just an example of the many changes that Hummingbird has made.

Lots of websites have now been shunted down the search engine results pages (SERPS) due to this change, why? Well there are many answers to this but one key answer would be the lack of content and recent updates. If your website is out of date and does not have enough related content then its likely to be negatively affected.

How can I make my website Hummingbird friendly?

There are lots of ways to make your website Hummingbird friendly but I will cover just a few in brief:

  1. Website content and hierarchy
  2. Content updates
  3. Social networking

1. Website content and hierarchy

Re-arrange your website content so that you have more useful content for users, create more content such as extra web pages and give things away like top tip documents to keep users coming back. Look at the hierarchy of your content, Google wants to see a logical structure not a big paragraph of text. It needs to know the bits that are important such as headings, sub headings, links, bullet points and media content such as images and videos.

2. Content updates

Updating your website regularly is now more important than ever, I can hear you now (“I don’t have the time”) well Google has over 80% of searches online and they want you to update your website with fresh content for users. Its your decision if you don’t want to keep up with the competition.

3 good ways to update your website regularly

  • The best way is to add a blog to your website and start blogging. This will give you the opportunity to address popular questions, engage with your readers by allowing comments and dialogue about what you have written and it will result in other website linking to your content… very powerful indeed.
  • Social feeds are a great way of updating your website without having to do much, your social networking accounts can be embedded into any web page and update users as to whats going on.
  • FAQ pages are going to pop up everywhere on your competitor websites, this is a great way of addressing questions that you get asked all the time and potentially questions that could be asked in search engine as people are starting to do already.

3. Social networking

Google will rank your website higher if you take advantage of Facebook, Google+, Twitter and Linkedin (other are available), if you want to make your website Hummingbird friendly then you will create the accounts and tweet / post etc every time you add content to your website and start getting your head around regular social activity. If thats not you then pay someone else to do it.
